GLOBAL WARMING by Viktor Kranjčec

Hello Jin! Today I wanted to talk to you about one of the world’s biggest problem – global warming. If you don’t know what global warming is (if you don’t, sorry but I find it kind a silly), I’ll explain it to you. Global warming is gradual heating of Earth’s surface, oceans and atmosphere.

Global warming started in 1800s (industry revolution) and day by day the problem is getting bigger. Over the last century temperatures have risen for 1.4 ͦF (0.8 ͦC) and in next 100 years they will rise in a range from 20 ͦF (1.1 ͦC) to 11.5 ͦF (6.42 ͦC). This is a huge problem, but not all people agree that global warming is real (for example Donald Trump). 3 % of climate scientists do not agree that global warming is the result of human activity; they think it’s a natural cause. Greenhouse gases are the main cause of global warming. They are making “greenhouse effect”. The greenhouse effect is the interaction between Earth’s atmosphere and radiation from the Sun. Furthermore, I forgot to say that the biggest amount of the gases is the carbon dioxide (CO₂). Its amount is increasing 100 times faster than in 1800s. We are producing it when we burn fossil fuels and by deforestation. Deforestation just by itself produces about 1 billion tons of carbon dioxide per year.

Did you know that global warming is the main cause of unusually strong hurricanes? We are also dealing with very high temperatures not just in summer but in all seasons. We witnessed very high temperatures in summer 2015. Global warming can actually cause unusually cold weather, like January 2017 – temperatures dropped to -20 ͦC. Global warming can be stopped by recycling. We can use less cars. Bikes exist too! Factories could be shut down – most of them are located in China and India. We must use more renewable energy, like wind, the Sun and water.

Hopefully this letter inspired you to do something about this problem. You can start now, show solutions to the people and encourage them to help us save the planet Earth.

Thank you!
